1936 Lanz Bulldog Crawler Restoration

1936 Lanz Bulldog Crawler PS 44 (44HP)

Serial Number 129652

Made in Mannheim Germany by Heinrich Lanz AG. Single cylinder two stroke diesel engine, designed to run on crude oil.

In 2008 we found out about the Lanz Bulldog Crawler in the Eulo- Cunnamulla region in western QLD on a friends farm. The tractor lay in a field which was an hour drive from the homestead, surrounded by thick scrub making it hard to find and possible to bypass if you didn’t know it was there. The owner of the property told me that he remembers seeing the tractor in the field when they first moved to the property about 50 years ago. The abandoned Lanz Bulldog was situation near a dam and was possibly used in making the dam, maybe pulling a scoop. Lucky for us the tractor was almost complete with original parts with the only thing missing being the tractors cylinder head. A few months after the discovery, I drove our tilt tray truck on a three day round trip to collect the tractor. The property owner bulldozed a track to the Lanz and cleared the trees around it to allow our truck to get access to it.

Once we got it home I started cleaning it down and unseizing the piston, this took a bit of soaking with kerosine and a crow bar chained tothe flywheel to move. We had Dale Mason from Classic tractor restorations carry out the engine restoration, which included new oversize piston, new crank bearings,

Photos of some of the professional work Dale Mason from Classic Tractor Restorations carried out, he also was able to source directly from Germany replacement parts, including piston, cylinder head, hot bowl stove, flywheel covers, radiators and various other small parts. He also made and machined parts as needed to repair worn and damaged components.

I picked up crawler from Classic Tractor restorations in November 2012 and set about completing the rest of the restoration, removal of final drive to inspect clean and grease, it had had an earlier repair on the steering clutch bearings, clutch plate where in real good order. I did however replace the brake linings; I used woven brake lining material available from Repco. The track roller bushes were replaced, with machined round bar to the pin size and to match the amount of wear in each roller. All large major parts were sent to sandblaster for sand-blasting, panels and mudguards sent to panel shop for repair. Hours and hours of cleaning, sand-blasting small parts bolts and nuts.

There is a bracket the extends from the drivers platform to the final drive housing, at some stage in its life this bracket had a hard hit and where it attaches to the housing it had broken and cracked the cast iron around bolt hole. With the help from a friend we cast iron welded the housing up, including filling in the bolt hole. To ensure this didn’t cause a repeat failure, I swapped the housing from side to side, so now the repaired housing is on the LH side of machine, repair to the front were nothing bolts to it.

The LH flywheel cover was missing, we got a replacement through classis tractor restorations, there is no cover available for Lanz crawlers, so a wheel tractor one needed to be used, the crawler flywheel covers are in two pieces to allow the removal of cover as the tracks would stop a one piece cover being removed. I cut cover in half and welded bracket inside to house nuts.

Seat frame brackets were in bad shape, with cracks and welds from repair all over them, I chose to fabricate new ones out of thicker material to give it more straingth, the original brackets would of taken alot of time to straighen and repair.

Track rollers layed out after making up new inserts between roller and pins.

New brake lining installed to brake band and clutch packs refitted after inspection and clean, clutch discs were in very good condition.

Fascinating article. I run the Lanz Register which holds information on more than 6,500 Bulldogs around the world, of which about 1,500 are in Australia. I would like to chat. Please contact me on watson.andrew@virgin.net. This tractor was known to me, but only that it had been exported to Australia and imported by General Farm Machinery Pty.Ltd., Brisbane.

HI, I am a Lanz enthusiest. I photocopied a Bulldog crawler parts book, all in German . This was obtained from Mr Muhr, then a retired Bulldog mechanic for VIC. If you want I could re-photocopy this info for you. Alternatively All of Mr Muhr's Bulldog books are now in a Victorian tractor museum in Vic somewhere. I have forgotten where. Maybe try Warracknabeal.
